Frequently asked questions.
What is a Fraternity?
A fraternity is a brotherhood formed around common goals and aspirations. In fraternities, men make a commitment to each other for life. The members that form a fraternity share their efforts, friendship, and knowledge. Together they learn, grow, and make their organization stronger. Their common experience builds ties that last a lifetime.
What does Phi Kappa Theta do?
The Georgia Tech Gamma Tau chapter was established in 1969 and is going strong today. We, Phi Kaps, focus on the five developmental pillars of our fraternity: spiritual, fraternal, intellectual, social, and leadership. By exemplifying these characteristics, the brothers of Phi Kappa Theta form a close-knit family. This lets us lean on each other in the academic challenges that we all face as students of Georgia Tech, as well as in the challenges of daily life. Through intramural sports, camping trips, campus involvement, and other activities, Phi Kappa Theta helps build character in the parts of life that academic effort cannot. Overall, Phi Kappa Theta encourages the inherently social nature of man, and develops brothers who are outgoing, giving, and confident.
How does my son join a Fraternity?
College men seeking to join a fraternity can come to recruitment events during Georgia Tech IFC’s formal Rush. During Rush, should a fraternity decide that your son is a good fit for them, he will receive a bid. Once your son has received a bid, he can accept any time during the formal Rush period to become a member of the fraternity that extended him a bid.
what is Rush?
Rush is how fraternities meet potential new members (PNMs). During the period of formal Rush, PNMs come to rush events to meet brothers in a low-stress, inviting, environment. Rush week is 100% “dry”, meaning no alcohol is allowed in the house during this time. During Rush, fraternities will extend bids to those PNMs that they like most and those who were extended bids have until the end of the Rush period to accept and become a member.
What is the Associate Member Program?
The Associate Member(AM) program is how we prepare our bid acceptees for brotherhood in this fraternity. The AM program lasts for about 12 weeks and ensures that our AMs learn important life skills and are fully integrated as members of this brotherhood before they become brothers of Phi Kap.
How expensive is membership in Phi Kappa Theta?
Dues for brothers of Phi Kappa Theta are $1300.
Dues for Associate Members are $875.
How will Phi Kappa Theta affect my son’s academics?
All brothers of Phi Kap are here to obtain a degree from Georgia Tech, so this goal is primary to our fraternity as a whole. Our GPA as a chapter has been rising steadily over the past two years. Currently, our chapter GPA is tied for 7th amongst all 32 fraternity chapters on campus and is well above the Greek life and undergraduate men’s GPA. This happens through the efforts of the Phi Kap scholastics team. The scholastics team works very hard to ensure brothers are prepared for the classes they are taking and aid brothers thoroughly in their study efforts. Additionally, we facilitate collaboration amongst older and younger members of the fraternity who share majors/coursework so that our members have someone to turn to for an academic mentor. Should your son become a member of Phi Kappa Theta, he too will have access to these wonderfully helpful resources and this strong support network as they work through their academic coursework.
What professional opportunities does Phi Kappa Theta provide?
Phi Kappa Theta provides its members with a myriad of leadership opportunities to foster the leadership skills of our members in our roughly 30 chair positions and 7 executive positions. Aside from developing the leadership qualities of our members, our professional development team works very hard to ensure every brother has an industry-standard resume, interview preparedness skills, and contacts in their respective career tracks. Additionally, our alumni network works in tandem with our professional development team to get brothers placed in well-paying positions at prestigious companies such as Meta, Amazon, P&G, Apple, Coca-Cola, Delta, SpaceX, and many more.
Will my son be hazed?
Hazing is a criminal offense in the state of Georgia. Additionally, hazing is an issue that Georgia Tech, IFC, and Phi Kappa Theta take very seriously. Our chapter takes a strict no-hazing policy, and we guarantee that your son will never be asked to do anything unbecoming of a gentleman while seeking or holding membership in this fraternity.
